This weekend, Liz and I went to see Shine a Light at the new IMAX theater near our place. It rocks, seriously. Hadn’t seen an actual (read: entertainment) movie in IMAX before; I’d just seen a documentary previously. Anyway, it was obviously a Scorsese film, which was cool, and the set list is rad (lots of less-popular tracks, with a smattering of the hits (naturally). Go see it, if you can. Definitely worth the price. (Incidentally, the new theater near us features self-service/free-refills of all sizes of drinks, so that’s cool…they also have a full bar and a crazy ice cream shop.)

I also finally got around to posting some pictures from as far back as October 2006. Here they are, in chronological order:

A lot of the photos from these sets have been added to my new photoblog.

Oct 23 2007

On 9/15, Liz and I went to see The Reverend Horton Heat at The Meridian. It was a good show, as always. I think I’ve seen the Rev. something like 12 or 13 times, from 1994 to present.

The band that opened up the evening (playing in the Meridian’s smaller room) was a local rockabilly outfit called The Octanes. They were good and tight. Next up, in the big room, was a band called The Phantom Rockers. They were okay, I guess, playing mostly rockabilly covers of ’80s pop tunes. The British singer made a lot of homophobic and misogynistic comments, so that was uncool. (I saw him in the bathroom after their set. He tipped the attendant $50 and said, “Now I can piss anywhere I want to.” He then went into a stall with some other dude; I think it was drug-related rather than sex-related, but who knows?). Interestingly, the Rev. thanked the next opening band (”Give it up for The Gore Gore Girls!”) and neglected to mention the Phantom Rockers. The Gore Gore Girls were pretty good, but weren’t really my style (I can’t really define what their style was/is…sort of rockabilly, I guess, but not quite).

Then came the Rev. As usual, the show was great. They didn’t play everything I wanted to hear (no “Nurture My Pig” this time), but they did do a few covers that they referred to as “the history of music.” It was totally rad. Their new drummer was great, as their drummers always are, and the Rev. of course surfed atop Jimbo’s bass. Good show all around.

Here’s the set list:

  1. Big Sky
  2. Baddest of the Bad
  3. Five-O-Ford
  4. I Can’t Surf
  5. Wiggle Stick
  6. 400 Bucks
  7. Pride of San Jacinto
  8. Callin’ In Twisted
  9. Revival
  10. Indigo Friends (hadn’t heard this one live before, it’s awesome)
    -The History of Music-
  11. Greensleeves
  12. Rock This Joint
  13. That’s All Right
  14. Folsom Prison Blues
  15. King of the Road
  16. Paranoid (sung by the drummer)
    -End History of Music-
  17. Bales of Cocaine
  18. Marijuana
  19. It’s Martini Time
  20. Jimbo Song
  21. Galaxy 500
  22. Bad Reputation
  23. The Devil’s Chasing Me (yay)
    -Encore-
  24. Cowboy Love
  25. Psychobilly Freakout
  26. Big Red Rocket of Love / Drum Solo / Bass Solo

Here are some excellent pictures of the show, courtesy of The Bald Heretic.

Good show, as they always are. Probably one of the top 3 Rev. shows I’ve been to.

Nov 02 2004

november is national novel writing month. liz and i are both participating. it’s fun. 50000 word novel in 30 days. aww yeah!

this past weekend, we went to see Saw. pretty good, kind of disturbing, kind of corny (at rare times). worth seeing. cary elwes is the man. it’s his best movie since Robin Hood: Men in Tights. okay, maybe not. i’m not sure what all he’s been in since then, actually.

that was saturday. on friday, we drove into downtown houston to see Dope play, along with Motograter and, uhh, Twisted Method. Dope kicked ass, as usual. lots of new songs, from their forthcoming album. started off the set with “Pig Society,” which rocks and was quite fitting given the upcoming (on saturday, it was still upcoming) election. “stick the politicians and politics in prison.” indeed.

the previous weekend, we made a whirlwind trip to austin. okay, maybe not quite a whirlwind. liz picked me up from work on from work and we drove to austin for the Beastie Boys show that night. unfortunately, we ended up missing most of Talib Kweli’s opening set. but that’s okay, the B-Boys were amazing. better, even, than the last time i saw them. aww yeah. most old songs were played. good stuff, man, good stuff.

after the show, we met up with liz’s friend amy and her husband justin. we went back to their place, had a few beers, and liz and i crashed on their futon at about 4am. we left at about 11am or so and made the drive back to h-town. fast trip, but fun.

that day, we took a nap and then headed to the Alamo Draft House to see The Grudge (blah) and Evil Dead 2 (hooray!).

and that was that. good weekends, both. yes indeed.

Jun 12 2004

lots of stuff has gone down since i last wrote…i’m about to tell you all about it.

but first, who invited this guy?

me, circa 1994

what was with that hair? and the smirk? man, i was a little punk. that picture is from 1994. check this one out:

me, circa 1997

in 1997, i entered college. and, thankfully, i had already done something about the hair. apparently, i was less of a smirker, too.

that being said, here’s a summary of what’s happened to me: i’ve graduated, i’ve gotten married, i’ve spent a week in vegas, and i still haven’t found a job. if you’d like more details, click the “read more” link. if not, you won’t offend me if you skip them.

where to begin? hrm…

on may 15, i graduated from texas tech with an MS degree. i didn’t walk, though, so the actual time of the graduation was pretty uneventful. we slept in that day, and then liz and i went to see Mean Girls. very funny film. after that, i went to my friend j3ph’s mom’s graduation party (she’d gotten her PhD in music that morning) and hung out with him and his brother and some other people for a little bit. we played frisbee; it was neat. i then went home and had a quick dinner with liz before going out with friends as a sort of “party” to celebrate the graduation. yeah. check out photos from said event right here (sure, there’s only one picture there now. there’ll be more, as soon as i scan them). we met up with seth, tara, and joel at the library (not the place they keep the books OR the old dance club here in l-town, but an all right bar in the depot district), and had a few drinks. noel and trevor and their respective lady-friends joined us after a bit, as did fastmikey. the bouncer was giving noel’s girlfriend stephanie shit about being underage, so they left shortly for klusoz. eventually, we all joined them there. i don’t remember too many details about what all happened at klusoz, except that 1) thriftstore cowboys were playing, 2) i drank a lot of beer, 3) i bumped into a table and spilled the drinks of everyone sitting there, and 4) i bought 6 shots of jim beam for me, liz, seth, tara, noel, and stephanie. a good time was had by all. after klusoz, the six of us who had shots went to seth’s parents’ house and drank some more, i think. we sat around and talked for a while, then noel gave liz and i a ride home.

the next morning (5/16), liz and i woke up and i went to taco bell to get our post-drunk breakfast. after that, we went to seth’s parents’ house again for brunch, and saw seth’s parents, sister, brother-in-law, and niece and nephew. that was pretty fun, aww yeah.

the next few days weren’t very interesting, really; just hanging out and going to work and stuff.

but that thursday (5/20), liz and i drove to san angelo to see the burden brothers. this was completely insane, especially since we were already planning to see them the next night in lubbock at a weird festival-thing with a bunch of other bands. every once in a while, though, you’ve just got to give the universe the finger and remind yourself that you aren’t really as old as you usually feel. anyway, we napped that afternoon, ate dinner, and then drove to san angelo (about a 3 hour drive). we got there around 10:30, so we missed the opening bands and the first few burden bros. songs. it was weird; when we’ve seen them in lubbock, it’s usually been pretty packed. when we saw them in amarillo, it was really packed. there were under 20 people there in san angelo. the show was good, though. afterward, we met the band (again), and they signed the picture that we’d taken at that amarillo show. we told the drummer, taz, that we’d come from lubbock and that we were looking forward to the show the next day. he told us that he’d give us passes, but we’d already bought tickets. he got us backstage passes instead, which was pretty cool. aww yeah. anyway, after the show and stuff, we drove back home, arriving here at about 3:30am. we had to be at work at 6am that day, so we didn’t bother sleeping, just came home and showered and did a little packing for our trip to las vegas. we did stop by krispy kreme on the way to work, though, since we were up early enough to get donuts before work. work was long and slow that day; i was like a zombie. after work, we ate lunch and then napped for about 2 hours. after that, we went to the “x-fest” thing at the west texas canyon amphitheater. it was pretty cool, i guess. lots of bands. i was too tired to appreciate it fully, i think, but i did have a good time. we found the burden brothers’ manager and he gave us our backstage passes. we watched the first few bands (i forget who all played), and were up front for the bros’ set. it was cool. i caught a drumstick, aww yeah. after that, we met up with them where they were signing autographs, then went backstage and hung out for a bit. we decided, though, that we’d like to sit down, so we went back to the main amphitheater and watched the other bands. drowning pool was pretty cool; better than i expected. we also saw damageplan; also pretty cool, but not as cool as pantera. we actually left during their set, due to the tired-ness. also, we didn’t want to stick around for the last band, saliva, since we had no desire to see them. just like last year. yeah. anyway, we went home and ate dinner, and all was well as we went to bed, not too late that night, but pretty late considering the lack of sleep. yes.

saturday (5/22), we got up at 9ish, finished packing, and went to the mall so liz could by the shoes she wanted. from there, we went to the airport, where we caught our plane to las vegas. yet again, we didn’t get to sit next to each other on the plane; alas. anyway, when we got to vegas, we were stuck in the terminal for a few minutes because of a “security situation” (i never did figure out exactly what was up), but then we were on our way. we stopped by the tropicana, where i’d reserved a tuxedo. i tried it on, and, well, it rocked balls. then we went to the treasure island to check in for our wedding the next day. we thought, “hell, we can walk there, it’s not that far.” no, it’s really not. however, when unsure of exactly which direction it is, and when carrying one’s luggage + rented tuxedo, i highly DO NOT recommend walking from the tropicana to the treasure island. anyway, it all worked out. after treasure island, we checked in at the time share where my aunt was generous enough to have gotten us a room. we hung out for a while, then went back to the treasure island to catch the limo that took us to the court house to get our marriage license. $55 + legal IDs is all you need; it’s open 24 hours on weekends. after we paid the fee and signed the forms, we were heading back to the limo and this guy (who was waiting in line with a female companion) said to me, “hey man, do they like check IDs and shit?” “uhh, yeah.” yes, mr. guy, these marriages are legal. that was pretty funny. then it was back to treasure island, then back to our hotel, then sleep.

the next day (sun. 5/23) we got married at the treasure island wedding chapel. here’s some photos (3, as of right now - more coming when i scan them) taken at the actual event. after the ceremony, we ate lunch and then walked across the street to the venetian, where we rode in a gondola (photo also in this album). that night, we went to some hawaiian restaurant (the name of which i forget) and had a good time. ‘twas a good wedding day; i had lots of fun.

the next week (mon. 5/24 - fri. 5/28) was spent in las vegas, seeing the sights. we took lots of pictures, some of which might be scanned someday. highlights of the week: star trek: the experience on monday; gambled at the mgm grand, went to the m&ms and coca-cola stores, went up in the eiffel tower at the paris hotel on tuesday; saw the white tigers (and other cats, as well as the dolphins) at the mirage on wednesday; went to hoover dam and the shark reef (at mandalay bay) on thursday; and went to see The Day After Tomorrow on friday. we walked a lot, including walking through many of the other hotels and casinos, as well. it was an awesome honeymoon. sat. 5/29, we checked out of the timeshare, went to the airport, and waited for our plane. in the airport, we ran into jeff j., a guy i went to high school with, so i chatted with him a little bit before we got on the plane. liz and i actually got to sit next to each other that time, so that was cool. once we got home, we took a nap, and hung around the apartment.

since the vegas trip, not very much of note has really happened. just working and looking for a job. we went to lunch with oscar and colin the week after we got back; that was fun. last weekend (fri. 6/4, to be exact), we went to see nosmo king play at jake’s. good show, good show. we’ve watched a lot of movies, too. Shrek 2 is really cool. today, we saw The Stepford Wives. an updated version of the original (which we saw a few weeks back), i think, but the remake played up the dark comedy aspects more than the original. also, thankfully, it was more fast-paced.

this week, (wed. 6/9, to be exact), i drove to austin for a job interview. i also drove back from austin after the interview. that was a long day. lots of really hard rain, both on the way there and on the way back. i wish i would have brought a camera so i could take pictures of all of the weird signs one sees between here and there. my favorite was an apartment complex (i think…not sure exactly what it was) with a big sign that said “lobo village.” anyway, i left our apartment a little before 6:30am and got back here right at 12:30am. long day. but it’ll be worth it if i get an offer. i think the interview went well. we’ll see. i’m supposed to hear within a week.

Jan 27 2004

so i haven’t posted in a while. so what?

last night was the first “Domestics” show of the semester. it was also the first time i worked with my new cohost, DJ Webster (aka Mick, for those of you in-the-know). ‘twas cool. since i know him already, we had much wittier banter than matt and i ever did last semester. i also know that i’ll be able to trust him to show up all the time (or damn close to it), unlike matt. matt’s not a bad guy, he’s just not somebody i would have picked as my cohost. anyway, it was a good show and all went well, i think. yes.

so classes started a few weeks back. this time, SERIOUSLY, i’m taking my last 2 classes. at least for this degree at this university. they’re okay. one is pretty interesting, the other is pretty lame. of course, the lame one is the one that has oodles of reading (2 textbooks + lots of articles we have to download). reading is not bad if it’s interesting, but this shit is boring as hell. an article referenced in one of the articles we had to read was by someone named “boring.” that’s funny. anyway, yeah, the semester’s shaping up okay. in my interesting class, we have a “group” (2-person groups) project. this girl in my class declared that i’m her partner, so i guess i am. that’s okay, because she’s quite obsessive about always doing perfect work, so i know i can trust her to not slack off. at least, i hope so.

at 2:00, i’m going to meet with my (former) thesis advisors to discuss my independent study “courses.” basically, as i said, i’m going to try to finish up what i can of the thesis and turn it into a publishable journal article or conference paper. we’ll see…i’d like to turn it into something, but i don’t need the credits i’ll get for this, so i’m not sure how much time i’m willing to devote to it…i’ve gotta find a job, folks. HIRE ME, PLEASE.

i’ve been somewhat (for me) actively job-seeking lately. i’ve sent out more résumés in the past few weeks than i care to count. i had an on-site interview in austin last week. the work seemed interesting (basically consulting, though the company makes a proprietary software package, so most of the consulting is to companies that buy their software), the people seemed nice (really small company - something like 12 employees total). i met the president and the 2 vice presidents, and everybody seemed to like me. there’d be more travel than i’d care for, and the benefits aren’t spectacular. also, they wanted me to start no later than feb. 23. that just ain’t feasible, since i’m in class and i’m trying to finish up this schmesis stuff, too. when i’d thought i was doing a thesis, i’d hoped to be done with it around now (or, if i wasn’t, to at least not be in class so i’d be able to take a job and finish the thesis up in my “spare time”); that didn’t happen, though. i think they were ready to give me an offer if i could start right away, but i can’t, so i doubt if i ever hear from them again. oh well. it was an interesting experience. long goddamn day, though. especially since my flight coming back from austin got cancelled for no discernible reason. took a later flight and got home, obviously, but that kinda blew.

anyway, sunday i submitted a résumé for a position at the corporate office of the company that i used to work for (and i do again…i work at the new store in the same department i most recently worked in at one of the old stores…don’t give me no shit, they asked me to come back…they pulled me out of retirement…same boss, almost the same job, and i even got a raise). anyway, i submitted my résumé on sunday, and i got a call yesterday to set up a phone interview for today. the guy who called seemed really nice (i’ve never heard of him, despite my years with that company), and he seemed interested in me. he said that he didn’t think i really fit the job that i was technically applying for, given my lack of experience in the field, but that they’re planning drastic changes for the part of the company for which i was applying and that (especially with my master’s degree), he was almost sure they could find a use for someone with my background. he said he had to talk to some people and that he’d be back in touch about an on-site interview. sure, i’ve complained plenty about this company, but i’m also quite familiar with it, so i wouldn’t have to learn about a new company. i doubt they’d pay super-well, and i’ve heard that their benefits aren’t excellent (i’ve never been full-time with them, so i don’t know the details), but the kind of work he envisions someone with my background doing sounds interesting. a lot can be said for that, i think. also, since it would be a new position, i’d sort of be able to define my own job, which would be cool. we’ll see. at this point, i just want a job. i’m very flexible about everything that comes with it, such as pay and benefits. and this job would require a move to amarillo, which wouldn’t be that bad.

speaking of amarillo, i applied at pantex right before i got my undergrad degree. i had an on-site interview, but i’m glad i didn’t get a job there, since apparently they tape explosives together when they’re cracked.

also speaking of amarillo, liz and i went there last weekend. on friday night, we saw the Burden Brothers here in town. IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THEM, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND BUY THEIR ALBUM. IT’S REALLY CHEAP, BUT AMAZINGLY GREAT. anyway, we saw them and got the album cover autographed and whatnot, and all was well. they seem like nice guys, and they all seemed to think that my Baboon shirt was cool (which it is). yeah. so anyway, saturday night, liz and i went to amarillo and saw them again. just a quick trip up and back, but well worth it. the bar/club/whatever in amarillo had an actual stage, unlike where they played here, but it was about 7’ off the ground, so it was weird. we were near the front, but they were far away. anyway, this show reminded me of how stupid some people are. for instance: not every band/song is “mosh-worthy.” this band is really fucking cool, but they aren’t a mosh-type band. some lame-asses will most to anything, though, i guess. it reminded me of my friend jason’s list of things to do/know when attending a show:

1. If you ate Greek, Italian, or Indian before the show, chew some fuckin gum.
2. Wear a shirt with sleeves. Leave the shirt ON.
3. Take a shower and wash your hair at least once in the week prior to the show.
4. The pit != “Fight Club” (although this one is arguable). Really though, I just can’t understand why somebody would pay a ticket price to basically roam around throwing elbows and fists and generally trying to fuck people up, all the while ignoring the show. Save some money and find an alleyway.
5. If you’re tired, my shoulder is NOT a place for you to rest. My shoulder is not a convenient holder for your devil horns. My shoulder (or hip or leg or face) is not part of some magical crowd surfing ladder.
6. Pushing a crowd of people forward at full strength is retarded. Similarly, pushing a crowd of people backward at full strength is equally retarded.

that being said, here’s a picture liz and i took with the band. check it:

WE ROCK BALLS
Steev and Liz in the back, with the Burden Brothers: Casey Orr (bass), Corey Rozzoni (guitar), Vaden Todd Lewis (vocals/guitar), Casey Hess (guitar), and “Taz” Patrick Bentley (drums)

we’ve got a photo gallery, too…this picture is there along with lots of other steev and/or liz pictures. WIGGEDY WIGGEDY WORD.

i think that’s enough random crap for today.
