This weekend, Liz and I went to see Shine a Light at the new IMAX theater near our place. It rocks, seriously. Hadn’t seen an actual (read: entertainment) movie in IMAX before; I’d just seen a documentary previously. Anyway, it was obviously a Scorsese film, which was cool, and the set list is rad (lots of less-popular tracks, with a smattering of the hits (naturally). Go see it, if you can. Definitely worth the price. (Incidentally, the new theater near us features self-service/free-refills of all sizes of drinks, so that’s cool…they also have a full bar and a crazy ice cream shop.)
I also finally got around to posting some pictures from as far back as October 2006. Here they are, in chronological order:
Pictures from Las Vegas, October 2006
Highlights:
Me with Frankenstein’s Monster, Madame Tussaud’s wax museum
Pictures from the Burden Brothers Show at the Texas Crawfish Festival, Old Town Spring, TX, 04/28/2007 (some are good, some are blurry)
Highlights:
Casey Hess #1 (Liz and I really like this one, despite the blur.)
Casey Hess #2 (We were right in front of him, hence the relatively high number of Hess shots in this set.)
Pictures from the Burden Brothers Show at Antone’s, Beaumont, TX, 07/21/2007 (some are good, some are blurry)
Highlight:
Pictures from the Baboon Show at the Double Wide, Dallas, TX, 12/21/2007 (some are good, some are blurry)
Highlights:
Baboon (This picture isn’t very good, really, but it does include Andrew Huffstetler’s signature “finger in the air.”)
Mark Hughes (This picture reminds me of the cover to Instrument Soundtrack by Fugazi.)
A lot of the photos from these sets have been added to my new photoblog.
Liz and I went on two trips recently, and we actually remembered to 1) bring the camera and 2) take pictures. February 27 - March 2, I was in Philadelphia for a conference and Liz came up for the weekend. It was a lot of fun; there was a Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art that was really good, and we also saw a Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute. We saw a lot of historical things, too, and we plan to go back to see more.
Here are all of our Philadelphia photos, here are our pictures from the Star Wars exhibit, and here are a few of the good ones. (More to follow in later posts, most likely.)

The following weekend, we went to Texas Fear Fest in Dallas. They screened some old horror movies and had lots of panels with actors/directors/writers/etc. We got some pictures and autographs there, too.

Yes, Kane Hodder was actually choking me, and his hands are strong. My neck hurt for the rest of the day.
on new year’s day this year, i decided to shave. not sure why. i’d had facial hair (goatee or full beard) off and on (mostly on — i think the longest i’d been without it was about 3 weeks) for almost 10 years, since i graduated from high school.
so i shaved. and i decided to make a photo essay out of it, inspired by the similar essay that my pal j3 posted a year or so ago (can’t find the link right now — his descriptions were funnier than mine, but i took more pictures so we’re even).
1. so here i am as it began, with a full beard.
2. not sure what this is called as i don’t know if i’ve ever seen anybody with facial hair quite like this. except maybe vinnie paul.
3. this one is a tribute to my late uncle bob. he always had his facial hair like this. if i were more of a man, i’d try to pull this off semi-permanently, but i don’t think i could cut it. uncle bob actually didn’t have the soul patch, but i needed it for the next steps.
4. hey, who’s that? why, it’s White Trash Steev! who invited that guy? he always drinks all the beer.
5. mustache + soul patch. liz thinks this one is creepy. i’m inclined to agree.
6. even creepier. something about standalone mustaches just screams child molestor or ’70s porn star, so it had to go. of course, the look on my face doesn’t help it any.
7. and here’s where i ended up, where i’ve been all year (two months, whee) so far (well, i sometimes have a bit of shadow because i’m lazy, but this is basically it). not sure how long it’ll last; i still think i look weird without a beard of some sort, so before too much longer (ie. before the end of the year), i wouldn’t be too surprised if the beard returns.
someday, i’ll have to do this again so i can have the beard-without-a-mustache picture.
And there you have it. My Facial Hair. i expect the pulitzer committee’s phone call any day now; i’m more than ready to accept my award for photojournalism.
